Hoarders get a bad rap. Looked upon as mentally ill folks with stockpiles of canned foods, toilet paper and paper plates, hoarders are generally quite folks who keep to themselves. Hoarding is not something often discussed in the open. But a bit of hoarding that doesn't delve into the depths of obsession and compulsion can be a good thing.
Gold is an item that is often hoarded by those who are expecting the end of the world. But hoarding gold can actually result in a profit if done properly. Like anything else, gold should be bought when the price is down and bought with little fees. A very small amount of gold can be worth a lot of money, so storage is not a problem. If you it makes you feel better you can even easily hide gold bars and coins under the floorboards of your house.
Silver is the little brother of gold. More reasonably priced than gold, silver bullion and coins can be bought and stockpiled in a similar manner. Silver is my item of choice for hoarding as I can pick off good deals on silver coins on eBay.com and yard sales without breaking the bank. Silver, like gold is unlikely to drop down to nothing. Buy it when it is low and sell it when it is high.
Especially in the current market, the hoarding of aluminum and copper looks like quite an opportunity. The problem is that you need some room for storage. Keeping a few million empty beer cans in your living room can cause quite a problem with domestic and social relations. However, with the great drop in price in these materials it is something to look at for the hoarder to be. When the world economy again booms, aluminum and copper will be needed for planes, electrical wiring, and more beer cans. The hoarder will be laughing all the way to the scrap metal dealer.
One way to hoard copper is by stashing away all the copper pennies that you get as change. The pennies made in 1982 and before are worth more as copper than a penny. A jar can be used to collect the pennies and then move them to a new area as you acquire them. Older nickels are another coin that you might want to consider hording.
Well, I would write more, but I have to get back to digging holes in my backyard to hide my loot. Now what to do with all those cans?
